Funeral services for former Lawrence County Sheriff William Edward Mullins will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Shalom Baptist Church in Silver Creek with interment following in the New Hebron Cemetery. Mr. Mullins, age 79, entered into the eternal rest of his Lord Monday, December 18, 2023, at his home in New Hebron. Saulters Moore Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
The Mullins family will receive friends Friday, 2 hours prior to the funeral service, beginning at 12 Noon until 2:00 PM at Shalom Baptist Church.
Mr. Mullins will be carried to his final rest by his nephews, Charles Prestridge, Joe Prestridge, Dereck Prestridge, Charlie Mullins, Chad Hodges and Jerry Mullins, Jr.
William Edward Mullins was born on June 22, 1944 in Lawrence County to Charles and Sippie Dampier Mullins. He was raised in the Crooked Creek Community and graduated from New Hebron High School, where he played football for the Golden Bears.
Mr. Mullins began his law enforcement journey as an officer in the Prentiss Police Department. His commitment to protecting and serving the public led him to join the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Department before becoming a sheriff's deputy for the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. In 1995, he achieved his career highlight when he was elected sheriff of Lawrence County, where he served with dedication until his retirement in 1999.
Sheriff Ryan Everett, the present sheriff of Lawrence County, fondly remembers Sheriff Mullins for his quick wits, constant jokes, and his ability to connect with anyone. His warm nature endeared him to all those who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him.
In his later years, Mr. Mullins enjoyed spending time at Lola's One Stop in Silver Creek. There, he would gather with friends to share conversations over cups of coffee while catching up with community happenings. He also had a passion for Westerns and football—two past times that brought him great joy.
William E. Mullins leaves behind a legacy of bravery, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to serving others. His stellar contributions to law enforcement will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched during his career.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mullins is preceded in death by his son Will Mullins; his daughter, Mandy Clark; his brother, Jerry Mullins and a sister, Jane Prestridge.
His memory will forever be cherished by his daughters, Sandy (Scott) Hunt and Cindy (Charles) Welch, both of New Hebron; his wife, Marilyn Mullins of Brookhaven; a sister, Gladys Hodges of New Hebron and a brother, Charlie Mullins of Silver Creek. Mr. Mullins also leaves behind 10 grandchildren.
