Gladys Polk Bass was born in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi on February 10, 1935 to Lee and Earnie Parish Polk. Her father, a World War I Veteran, and her mother, a school teacher, raised their daughter in Jefferson Davis County. She navigated through challenging times with grace, having grown up during the Great Depression. This period instilled in her a sense of frugality and resourcefulness that her sons fondly recall as they remember how she could truly "stretch a dollar." A graduate of Prentiss High School, Gladys dedicated many years of her life to caregiving working as a nurse at the Jefferson Davis County Hospital before transitioning to the Jefferson Davis Extended Care Facility where she ultimately retired as the Activities Director. Her role as an Activities Director was a perfect fit for her as it allowed her to express her deep love and compassion for people.
Among all her achievements, Mrs. Bass loved her family and considered the heritage of her grandchildren as one of her proudest accomplishments. She supported them wholeheartedly in their endeavors and cheered them on in all their pursuits. Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Bass found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her yard was a colorful oasis filled with flowers that she tended to with great care and pride. In her retirement years, she embarked on adventures with fellow seniors on chartered bus trips to various destinations like Branson, Washington DC, and even Niagara Falls. In addition to being a member of the Eastern Star, Mrs. Bass was also an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was involved in various ministries and served her Lord faithfully for many years.
Mrs. Bass is preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Earnie Parish Polk, her beloved husband William K. “Billy” Bass and her brothers, Edward Doyle “Ed” Polk and John Polk.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her sons, William (Theresa) Bass, Larry (Martha “Sissy”) Bass and Gary (Jennifer) Bass, all of Silver Creek. The legacy of their Nanny will also live on through the grandchildren she adored, Caroline Bass, Madison Bass (fiancé, Donnie Reid), Austin (Kailey) Bass, Jerry-Lee Bass, Ethan Bass, Elizabeth Bass and a great-granddaughter, Kynslee Bass.
