CROPWELL – Hilas Clyde Earhart, Jr. (H.C.) born February 27, 1922, in Louisville, Mississippi, and a resident of Pell City, Alabama since 1974, passed away on March 13, 2018. He was 96 years old. A veteran of WWII, he served as a second Lieutenant in the Air Corps. After graduating from high school, he received a football scholarship to Southwestern of Memphis, TN (Rhodes College), to play for Coach Ed Kubale until he joined the Air Corps during WWII. After the war, he continued his education, receiving a football scholarship to Duke University. He later transferred to Mississippi College where he earned his B.S. degree in 1946, and later earned his Master’s in Education from Mississippi State University. He accepted a position of football coach and women’s basketball coach at Louisville High School and later became Principal.He was employed at Louisville High School for 8 years before accepting a position as Safety Engineer for Southern Natural Gas Company, where he worked for over 30 years. H.C. was an avid golfer and a founding member of the Niknar Country Club (MS) and later a member of the Pine Harbor Club (AL). He also loved to travel the world with the love of his life, his wife of 70 years, Mary “Willie” Buckley Earhart. H.C. is preceded in death by his parents, Hilas Clyde Earhart, Sr, and Zelma Johnson Earhart. He is survived by his wife, Mary Willie Buckley Earhart; his sister, Imogene Thompkins, three daughters Cassandra Dickson (Charles), Jolayne Powell (Mike), and Pamela Young (David); four grandchildren, Wicks Dickson (Kelly), Cody Dickson Morgan (Matt), Whitney Young, and Shelby Young; one great-grandchild, Drake Morgan.Graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 11:00 am at New Hebron Cemetery, New Hebron, Mississippi.
