Funeral services were held Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Saulters Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Prentiss, MS for Mr. Vernie King, age 87, of Prentiss, MS who passed away November 12, 2009 at The Grove Nursing Home in Columbia, MS. Internment followed at King Family Cemetery in Prentiss. Rev. Ken Hickman, Rev. James Nations and Rev. Louie Davis officiated. Pall bearers were Cecil Evans, Tommy Gatwood, Thomas Hamilton, Mark King, Dale Polk and Jimmy Weeks. Honorary pall bearers were Herman Reid and Wesley Reid. Mr. Vernie Ellis King was born on April 9, 1922 in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi. He was the son of Charlie E. King and Ollie Foles King. Mr. King was married to the former, Jessie Mae Knight. Mr. King worked with the Road Maintenance Crew for Jefferson Davis County until retiring. He also served in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of New Chapel Pentecostal Church. Mr. King is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jessie Mae King of Prentiss; a daughter and son-in-law, Lola and Rev. Albert Reid of Prentiss; a brother, Lawrence King of Prentiss; two sisters, Cecile Kirkley of Prentiss and Emma Jean Foster of Pascagoula; two grandchildren, Dean Reid and wife, Michele of Meridian and Carla Thornhill and husband, Delon of Jackson, MS; four great grandchildren, Murphy, Shelbie and Ellie Reid of Meridian and Maley Kate Thornhill of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Thomas King and Charles King, Jr. and two sisters, Eunice Stewart and Emma Lou Amason.
