Funeral Services for Chief Bill Matthews will be held at 10:00am on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Covington-Jefferson Davis Baptist Association Building. Mr. Matthews, age 71, passed away from this life on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in Prentiss. Reverend Ken Roberts and Reverend Jake Staten will officiate. Lyn Holloway will provide the musical service and interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Brookhaven. Saulters-Moore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Tyler Matthews, Jason Wambolt, Jonathan Fairley, Riley Smith, Franklin Cooley, Drew Stephens, T.D. Graves, and Will Crowdus. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Bassfield Fire Department. Billy Watson Matthews, II, was born on August 25, 1945 in Quantico, VA, to Billy Watson Matthews and Damie Sue Sutton Matthews. Bill Matthews was the Chief of the Bassfield Fire Department and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in Vietnam. He was a former Deputy Sheriff for the St. Tammany Parrish Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Jefferson Davis Sheriff’s Department. Chief Matthews was the former owner of Royer Mobile Homes and was a member of Bassfield Baptist Church. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his mother and father. Survivors are his wife, Liz Matthews of Bassfield; 1 son, Grant Matthews and his wife Brandie of Bassfield; 1 daughter, Amanda Surla of Slidell, LA; as well as a host of other relatives, and friends. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00pm at the Covington-Jefferson Davis Baptist Association Building.
