Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Saulters Moore Funeral Chapel in Prentiss, MS for Mr. Macon C. Holliman, Sr., age 79, of Prentiss, who passed away June 24, 2009 at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg. Internment followed at Carson Cemetery. Rev. L. C. Anthony and Rev. Robert Cooper officiated. Pall bearers were Jimmy Newell, Frank Starnes, Ronald Jones, Jimmy Dale Craft, Tommy Myers, Billy Langley, Wayne McPhail and Chris Hudson. Mr. Holliman was born and raised in Ovett, MS. He was a graduate of Whitfield High School. He then joined the U. S. Navy, which included almost two years of active duty. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He was a strong advocate of the importance of an education. He continued his education that eventually led to a Masters degree in School Administration, a Masters degree in Vocational Administration, a Bachelor, Master and Educational Specialist degrees in Vocational and Extension Education; and was a Certified Administrator by the Mississippi Department of Education and by the Southern Association of Accreditation of Colleges and Schools. Macon retired after serving as Superintendent of Education in Jefferson Davis County. Prior to that, he was a Vocational-Agricultural instructor and taught in Simpson, Covington, Lawrence and Jefferson Davis counties throughout his tenure of more than thirty years. He was a member of the Mississippi Association of Vocational-Agricultural Teachers, and a member of Gideon International. He was an active member of Dublin Baptist Church. One of his favorite pastimes and passions was that of Christian song writing. Recently he was able to record some of these songs with the help of two of his friends, Mary McCain and Jimmy Newell. One of these recordings will be played at his service as a final memorial to him. Survivors include a son, Macon (Corky) Holliman, and a daughter, Chaundra Polk, both of Prentiss, two sisters, Maureen Poole and Norma McLemore both of Ellisville, a brother, J. W. Hollimon of Richton, ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Edwards Holliman, his daughter, Cyndi Marshall, his parents, W. W. and Coriene Hollimon, and a sister, Voncile Hollimon.
