Funeral Services were held Wednesday October 28, 2015 at New Hebron Baptist Church in New Hebron, MS for Mildred Newsom. Rev. Mike Grenn officiated. Pallbearers were: Miles Riley, Josh Yarbrough, Jason Yarbrough, Matthew Melzer, John Newsom and Nicholas Newsom. Saulters Moore of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Mildred Louise Askin Newsom went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on October 25, 2015. Mildred was born December 28, 1921 in New Hebron and was the only child of Galloway Bishop Askin and Jonnie Ola Thompson. As a lifelong resident of New Hebron, she was active in the community including, charter member and past president of the Evergreen Garden Club, past president of the County Extension Homemakers Council serving as its state public relations chairman, 4-H Leader, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Band Booster Club, member of the New Hebron Woman's Club and most recently served as Chairman of the New Hebron Centennial Celebration in 2005. She was employed as a seamstress at New Hebron Manufacturing and was a teacher assistant in the New Hebron School Library and Study Hall. She was also owner and operator of her own ceramic shop, M/N Ceramics and Gifts. As an active member of New Hebron Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday School Teacher for children and adults. Being a project-minded person, she initiated and developed the Spring Hallow Nature Trail on her grandparent’s farm where over 50 different tree species were named becoming the State's 22nd officially recognized arboretum by the Garden Clubs of Mississippi. Mildred's love of her family is evident through her creation of family photo albums, documenting family travels and events, year by year providing life long memories for children and grandchildren who affectionately refer to her as "MoMo". Mrs. Newsom is survived by Becky (James) Yarbrough, John B. "Buddy" (Sharon) Newsom IV, and Pamela Melzer; seven grandchildren: Miles (Michelle) Riley, Christi (Mark) Chavis, Josh (Robin) Yarbrough, Jason (Carrie) Yarbrough, Matthew (Meike) Melzer, John B. Newsom, V and Nicholas Newsom; fifteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John B. Newsom and a daughter, Beverly Jo Newsom.
