Anita Roberts Applewhite

Funeral services were held Friday June 12, 2015 at L.L. Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church in Bassfield, MS for Annita Roberts Applewhite who passed away June 9, 2015 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS. Interment followed at Bassfield Cemetery. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Rev. Glen Shows & Rev. Wayne Locklar officiated. Pallbearers were: Michael Applewhite, Stephen Carlisle, William Lowe, Jr., Kenny Miller, Will Miller and John Richards. Annita Roberts Applewhite was born November 1, 1928 in the Clem community of Jefferson Davis County, MS. She was the daughter of Lewis James Roberts and Jewel Myers Roberts. She attended Bassfield High School. Upon graduation in 1946, she studied business at Pearl River Community College. She married Ray Applewhite on June 17, 1949. Her work experiences included telephone operator, / Bookkeeper for McCarty-Holman and substitute teaching. Annita followed her husband, Ray throughout his distinguished career in the service of his country in the Army. Their overseas assignments took them to Germany, Taiwan and Turkey. In the states, assignments included Kansas, Texas, Alabama and Virginia. They retired to Jefferson Davis County in 1975. She served a combined 20 years on the advisory board and board of trustees for the South Mississippi Regional Library serving Bassfield, Prentiss and Columbia. She was a member of the Bassfield Culture Club and did volunteer work in the community for a number of years. Additionally, she served as a substitute teacher at Bassfield Elementary for several years. She was an active member of L.L. Roberts Memorial United Methodist church where she sang in the choir and served on numerous committees. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Clunan (fiancé, Stephen Carlisle) of Hattiesburg, MS; two sons, James Ray (Marian ) Applewhite of Bassfield, MS. and Jeffrey Applewhite of Winchester, VA; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Beedie Sullivan of Sumrall, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers and one sister. Online condolences and a guest registry are available at www.saultersmoorefuneralhome.com.
