Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Prentiss United Methodist Church for Rev. Sam McRaney, Jr., age 81, of Prentiss who passed away on April 20, 2013 at Jefferson Davis Community Hospital. Interment followed at Lone Star Cemetery. Rev. Sessions Polk, Rev. Allen Winstead and Rev. David Price officiated. Pall bearers were Sonny Everitt, Curtis Doyle McRaney, Jimmy Griffith, Matthew McRaney, Aron McRaney, Ryan McRaney, Brent McRaney and Connor McRaney. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Samuel Warren McRaney, Jr. was born on August 29, 1931 at Lone Star, MS. He was the son of Samuel W. McRaney, Sr. and Emily Cook McRaney. He graduated from Lone Star High School and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Southern MS in 1956. While at USM he served churches in the Hattiesburg district. He then earned his Bachelor of Divinity Degree from Candler’s School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1958. He was ordained an Elder in the Methodist church in June 1960 becoming a member of the Mississippi Annual Conference of the Methodist Church. He was appointed to churches within the Conference until his retirement in June 1996. He also taught school in the Jefferson Davis County School System for twenty years. Mr. McRaney is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carolyn McRaney of Prentiss; his four sons, Richard McRaney (Sonja) of Seminary, MS, Rev. Len McRaney (Patricia) of Natchez, MS, Sam McRaney, III (Kelly) of Gulfport, MS and Kenny McRaney (Chrissy) of Saucier, MS; his fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Theresa Byrd (Steve) of Prentiss, MS, David Peavy of Gulfport, MS and Mark Peavy of Hattiesburg, MS; two step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
