Graveside services were held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Society Hill Cemetery in Oakvale, MS for Mr. Shelby Stephens, age 89, of Oakvale, MS who passed away January 29, 2013 at his residence. Interment was immediately following services. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Dr. Jarrett Stephens and Rev. Mark McArthur officiated. Pall bearers were Eric Stephens, Kyle Stephens, Darren Higgs, Darren Sherman, Lewis Polk and Shane Coleman. A native of Lawrence Count, Shelby Lee Stephens was born on April 17, 1923. He was the son of Dan Stephens and Lillie Butler Stephens. He served in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. He owned and operated Stephens Grocery for twenty five years. He also worked for Canal Barge Company and was a Supervisor and Road Forman for District 2 in Jefferson Davis County. Mr. Shelby enjoyed making jelly and divinity for his friends and neighbors and he loved drinking Dr. Pepper. He was a member of Society Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Stephens is survived by his sons, Lynn Stephens (Mary) of Fleetwood, NC, Glynn Stephens (Cherly) of Bossier City, LA and William “Big Shot” Stephens of Oakvale, MS; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; his nephew Thomas Higgs (Barbara) of Oakvale, MS; and three sisters, Mamie Hux and Karry Lack both of Natchez, MS and Olene Hudson of Brookhaven, MS.
