Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church in Bassfield, MS for Mrs. Cecil Glenn Dickson Blount, age 91, of Bassfield, MS who passed away on July 13 at her residence, surrounded by her family and pups. Interment followed at Bassfield Cemetery. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Rev. Glenn Shows officiated. Pall bearers were James Applewhite, Darrell Cooley, Randy Hathorn, Tom Watts, Chad Viniard, Andy Wilson and Johnny Kerley. Honorary pall bearer was Lowrey Saulters. Cecil Glenn Dickson Blount was born December 29, 1920, to Nathaniel and Beulah Dickson. After graduating from Bassfield High School and then the University of Southern Mississippi, she taught home economics and biology at Carson School before marrying the boy-next-door and her high school sweetheart, Buford C. Blount II. She then began an adventure filled life as the wife of an Air Force officer and pilot and traveled the world. Her many unique experiences took her from fleeing a military coup d’etat in Athens, Greece, to spending a romantic 20th wedding anniversary in Paris, to herding cows in Bassfield with Buford on their 40th anniversary. After retiring from the military, they continued their adventures by travelling to Europe, Mexico, and camping in the Saudi Arabian desert. As the Blount household CEO, she followed her husband to several states, countries and continents while raising their six children, twice on her own during the Korean War and Vietnam. She was a devoted mother and wife, who was active and supportive in the lives of her six children, attending every sporting, scouting, school event, recital and church activity. Once when asked her occupation she replied, “My children’s chauffer.” After returning to live in her hometown, she served 32 years at her husband’s side as the First Lady of Bassfield and the defacto deputy mayor. She was also the town’s first librarian. She regularly opened their home for town functions and entertained visiting officials, dignitaries and prospective community developers. The Mayor frequently conducted the day-to-day business of the town on the back porch of their home. He was always enthusiastic, did not care for restraint, a “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” kind of man. She was his balance, the quiet strength in the house, the steel magnolia. She was a devoted member of LL Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church. Her strong faith in God and love of her family sustained her throughout life’s challenges. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathaniel and Beulah Dickson, her beloved husband of 65 years Buford, her son David and her brother N.A. Dickson. She is survived by her children Susan Stacy of Bassfield, Buff Blount (Anita) of Hattiesburg, Garry Blount of Jackson, Robert Blount (Georgette Thabault) of Burlington, Vt., and Lisa Blount of Bassfield, five granddaughters Kelly Collins, Heather Martin, Wendy Blount, Megan Shafer and Lora Blount, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, devoted niece and friend Mary Smith, cousin Bobby Garraway and her pup Taco. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LL Roberts United Methodist Church, PO Box 96, Bassfield, MS 39421 or the Mayor & Mrs. Buford C.
