Dr. Roy Alfred Berry, Jr. was born December 11, 1933 in New Hebron, Mississippi and passed away on March 3, 2012 in Sacramento, California after a long battle with Dementia. Memorial Services were held March 17, 2012 at New Hebron Baptist Church. Following the memorial service, some family and friends gathered at “The Place” and appropriately ended the celebration of Dr. Berry’s life with a 21-Shotgun salute. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of arrangements. Al was a Chemistry Professor for 36 years at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. Everyone agrees that Al loved his students and they all loved him, even when he failed them. Al spent most of his free time at “The Place,” his land near New Hebron, hunting, raising Beagles and sharing the outdoors with untold friends and children. Bill Orr, his life-long hunting partner, said it best “Al was always happy.” In 2008, Al with his wife of 57 years, Marian Jean Berry, moved to Sacramento, California to live with his son and daughter in law, Dr. Roy and Traci Berry, and his grandchildren, Calvin Berry, Mark Berry, George Berry, Mari Tateyama and Trent Tateyama. He is also survived by his son and daughter in law, Jefferson Hord Berry and Dr. Peggy Elam of Nashville, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the “Allen Bishop, Gene Cain and Al Berry Scholarship Fund” at Millsaps College, 1701 N. State St., Jackson, MS 39210-0001 or the New Hebron Baptist Church Building Fund, P O Box 37, New Hebron, MS 39140.
