Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Saulters Moore Funeral Chapel in Prentiss, MS for Mr. Romie E. Kerley, age 78, of Bassfield, MS who passed away February 20, 2012 at MS Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Interment followed at St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Carson, MS. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Father Peter Varghese officiated. Pall bearers were Kevin Sylvest, Neal Burns, Billy Delancey, Gary Delancey, Tommy Kerley, Marty Kerley and Tyler Matthews. Mr. Romie Eugene Kerley was born August 11, 1933 in Bassfield, MS. He was the first of four children born to Louis James Kerley and Madeline Daley Kerley. After graduating from high school, he worked for several years in Texas, and then in 1949, he was drafted by the US Army and served 2 years in Germany. Upon his return to the United States, he settled in New Orleans, LA, where he met and married Arcadia Saida Cruz, formally of Tampico, Mexico. He then spent the next 33 years employed by Nabisco until his retirement in 1984. Upon his retirement, he returned to Bassfield where he spent the rest of his life, raising cattle and farming. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Mr. Kerley is survived by his wife, Arcadia Kerley of Bassfield; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Kerley Matthews and husband, Billy Matthews of Bassfield; his son, Joseph Louis Kerley and wife, Renee Berry Kerley of Sumrall; four grandchildren, Amanda Surla, Tyler Matthews, Madeline Kerley and Jolee Kerley; two sisters, Audrey Sylvest and Elizabeth Armstrong; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
