Virginia M. Brinson

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Saulters Moore Funeral Chapel in Prentiss, MS for Mrs. Virginia Brinson, age 92, of Prentiss, MS who passed away on September 2, 2011 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS. Interment followed at Prentiss Cemetery. Saulters Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss was in charge of all arrangements. Dr. French W. Tripp and Rev. Ben James officiated. Pall bearers were Glenn Mikell, Bill Abraham, Dent Mikell, Burkett Mikell, Chris Piepke, Mike Abraham and John Logan. Virginia Ella Mikell Brinson was born on July 28, 1919, the daughter of Byron Buford and Belle Benson Mikell, into a large family; she had 10 siblings. She graduated from Whitesand High School and Copiah Lincoln College. She married James Adam Brinson on August 6, 1939. She was employed by Federal Reserve Bank in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she lived while James was serving in the Pacific during World War II. After his return from service in the army, they moved back to Prentiss, where they established Brinson Grocery, which they ran for over 30 years. Mrs. Brinson was active for many years at Prentiss Presbyterian Church, where she taught a young children’s Sunday school class. She was well known to many of the children in grade school at Prentiss and was best known for her cooking talents and being “Room Mother”. Many of those recipients still remember her cakes and cookies. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She made afghans for numerous family members and together with her mother and sisters, pieced quilts for all the grandchildren in the family. After the sudden death of her husband in 1976, she cared for several family members, including moving to Jackson to live with her sister Thelma, who was ill. Just like her brother Harry, she loved gardening and working in her yard. Last year, she produced a “Bumper Crop”. Even at 90, she was proud to say her garden didn’t have any grass in its rows! She was one of the founding members of the family business, Brinson Farms, which is operated by John & Bettye Logan. This is a poultry and cattle operation, where she worked actively for several years, into her 80’s. She most recently lived at the Covington County Nursing Center in Collins, where she was loved by the staff and made many new friends. Mrs. Virginia Brinson is survived by her daughter, Bettye (John) Logan and her granddaughter, Leigh Logan; her brothers, Larue (Allene) Mikell and Roland Mikell; her sister, Doris (Jimmy) Rogers; sister-in-law Syble (Kenneth) Lee, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James A. Brinson; her brothers, Lamar, Curtis & Harry; and sisters, Thelma, Hilda, Mildred and Ann. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prentiss Presbyterian Church or to the Baptist Children’s Village, where her nephew, Dr. Rory Lee, serves as director.
