Funeral services were held Monday, March 28, 2011, at New Hebron Baptist Church for Mr. Fred G. Newsom, age 74, of New Hebron, MS, who passed away March 26, 2011 at Lawrence County Hospital in Monticello. Interment followed in New Hebron Cemetery. Rev. Derek Lambert officiated. Beautiful music was provided by Bro. Duane "Doc" Bradford and the church trio: Mrs. Becky Newsom Yarbrough, Mrs. Peggy Grayson, and Mrs. Betty Wigington. Serving as Pallbearers were Fred's nephews: Gordon Newsom, Keith Newsom, Frank Newsom, Jr., John B. “Buddy” Newsom, Kirk Newsom Harris, and Robert Hall Harris. Mr. Fred Gordon Newsom was born on March 2, 1937 in Lawrence County, MS. He was the son of John B. Newsom and Myrtle Berry Newsom. Fred played football at Mississippi State University in 1956-57. He retired as a Shipping Foreman at Georgia Pacific Paper Mill after 28 years. He was an avid Outdoorsman, a Mason, and a member of New Hebron Baptist Church. Mr. Newsom is survived by his wife, Sylvia Williams Newsom of New Hebron, MS; one daughter, Tanya Newsom Bridges of New Hebron, MS; two sons: Tony Newsom and wife Dana, of Prentiss, MS, and Joey Newsom and wife, Melynda, of Sumrall, MS; three brothers: John B. Newsom of New Hebron, MS, James A. “Brother Boy” Newsom of Pearland, TX, Frank Newsom of Columbus, MS; one sister, Genevieve Harris of Hazlehurst, MS; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Peggy Rube. Saulters-Moore Funeral Home of Prentiss handled arrangements.
